Where can I get an NHS dentist appointment in Herefordshire?

NONE of Herefordshire’s dentists are accepting new NHS patients without referral as figures show the county has seen a drop in the number of dentists working in Herefordshire over the past year.

NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire CCG saw the number of dentists fall by 8% from 2020 to 2021, with 33 dentists leaving the sector.

In England and Wales, a total of 2,500 dentists have stopped treating NHS patients and, with many practices struggling with recruitment, this has led to major staff shortages.

We asked readers of the Hereford Times if they had recently struggled to access NHS dental services, with many saying they had been unable to find an NHS dentist.

“I moved to Hereford a year ago and can’t find an NHS dentist, and none of them had an open waiting list for new patients,” said Judith Withnell.

“A few months ago the dental access center said they were only taking patients with facial swelling or uncontrollable bleeding. No fillings, no chipped teeth. I called NHS England who told me he had no obligation to make sure people could register with a dentist. but that my closest was Malvern. I lost my license due to health so this is not is not possible.

Lucinda Timmins said she encountered similar issues.

‘Moved to Hereford over three years ago and couldn’t find an NHS dentist,’ she said,

“I almost managed to get in with a dentist at Symonds Yat but the initial appointment was canceled in March 2020 due to Covid and now they are not taking new patients.

“I’ve been to an emergency dentist in Asda and Gaol Street and they’ve been amazing. But I haven’t been able to get a routine appointment for years.”

Others said they were forced to register with more distant dentists in areas such as Gloucester and Tenbury Wells.
